A Goat A Week... Starting 05 January 07

SOLD | 19" X 14" | Acrylic on board
Billy goats, nanny goats, kids, Pigmies, Nubians, Alpines, LaManchas... I will attempt to paint one goat every week for 10,000 weeks. Why Goats? As a painter I’m naturally drawn to mundane subjects often overlooked in the pursuit of beauty. Goats have been linked to humans for ages the world over, from basic sustenance to mythological and astrological studies.
Compared to the human figure, the goat is a foreign object in popular culture and in the world of high art. At the same time the form is so unique that it transforms what seems to be a simple exercise into an infinite quest. By concentrating my efforts on one subject for an extended period of time, I am forcing myself to explore and discover within predefined parameters. The limitation of painting only one subject actually frees me to delve deep into visual experimentation, moving my work forward into new directions.
